Dorje Drolö Sādhana: A Powerful Practice of Guru Padmasambhava
Dorje Drolö (རྡོརྗེགྲོལོད) is one of the eight manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava, the great master who brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. Dorje Drolö represents the wrathful aspect of Guru Padmasambhava, who subdues the negative forces and obstacles that hinder the spread of the Dharma and the welfare of sentient beings. He is depicted as a dark red heruka with a single face and three eyes, riding a tigress and holding a vajra and a phurba (ritual dagger). He is surrounded by flames and wears a garland of severed heads, symbolizing his power to cut through ignorance and delusion.

A sādhana (སྒྲུབཐབས) is a practice text that guides the practitioner through the stages of meditation on a specific deity, from visualization to mantra recitation to dissolution. A sādhana can be short or long, simple or elaborate, depending on the level of the practitioner and the purpose of the practice. A sādhana can be practiced individually or in a group, and can be performed for various aims, such as purification, accumulation of merit and wisdom, protection, healing, or realization.
There are many sādhanas of Dorje Drolö, some of which are revealed as terma (གཏེརམ), or hidden treasure teachings, by tertöns (གཏེརསྟོན), or treasure revealers. One of the most famous tertöns who revealed Dorje Drolö sādhanas was Sera Khandro (1892-1940), a female master and consort of Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987). Sera Khandro revealed a sādhana of Dorje Drolö from the Reality Ḍākinīs Secret Treasury (Chönyi Khandrö Sangdzö), which is considered to be very profound and effective. This sādhana can be found online in Tibetan and English translations.
Another well-known sādhana of Dorje Drolö is composed by Dudjom Rinpoche himself, who was also a great tertön and the head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Dudjom Rinpoche composed this sādhana at the request of some American students, and it is a short daily practice that can be easily performed by anyone who has received the empowerment and oral transmission from a qualified teacher. This sādhana can also be accessed online in English.
The practice of Dorje Drolö sādhana can bring many benefits to the practitioner, such as clearing away obstacles, dispelling negative influences, enhancing wisdom and compassion, and attaining the realization of the inseparability of emptiness and appearance. Dorje Drolö is especially helpful in times of degeneration, conflict, and turmoil, when his wrathful energy can subdue the forces of evil and protect the Dharma and its practitioners. Therefore, Dorje Drolö sādhana is a powerful practice that can transform our mind and benefit all beings.
